Summary

The development of political parties in Serbia over the past three decades has been accompanied by numerous upheavals, and the parties themselves have faced completely new and diverse challenges. During this period, numerous political actors have existed on the Serbian party scene, some have disappeared, then split and new ones have emerged. The dynamics of the development of the party scene in Serbia have been accompanied by turbulent events and political turmoil that have affected the period of democratic transition. Global changes, which have distanced elites from citizens, have directly affected political parties around the world. Serbia cannot be excluded from this general picture, where citizens, as in other parts of Europe and the world, are increasingly seeking to engage politically through less formal forms of political organization. However, parties still remain the engines of democracy and indispensable factors in the democratic development of society, and the subject of research on political parties remains the focus of academic interest for a large number of experts. This is best evidenced by the fact that thousands of studies and papers on political parties have been published worldwide.

The transition from single-party to multi-party systems in many countries of Eastern and Central Europe, as well as the restoration of democracy, have created additional challenges for institutional designers in these countries. The difficulties in choosing models and strategies for institutionalizing and building a party system, as well as the process of continuous reforms in this sphere, have opened up space for detailed analysis and scientific research. Serbia is no exception to this general picture, where the development of political parties in the past three decades has proceeded in several phases.
